When I go out to shoot photos at events like Folsom Street Fair, my intention is to search out the most beautiful men wearing the least amount of clothes. I asked one of the guys in the booth,
"So, who buys this stuff?"
"Nobody yet. It's just prototypes and we haven't put them up for sale yet."
"What market are you aiming at?"
"Oh, we just make it and sell it. We don't really care what people do with it after they buy it."
I was afraid of that. I told some friends about Fetish Tots and they seem to think it's some sort of artistic statement, not a real business. Even if this particular group is just making a statement, some slimeballs will take the idea and actually sell it to people.
Parents of small children are the most gullible of all consumers. There are so many yuppies in this town carrying around designer babies as accessories just so they have an excuse to consume more overpriced stuff. For the past 6 years Andy and Bill of BigMuscle.com, BigMuscleBear.com and their network of gay social networking sites threw their annual pre-Folsom Fair party. It always happens on the Saturday afternoon before the fair, so it's perfect for the tourists looking to get an early start. I spotted one celebrity tourist on his way to the restroom. Do you remember Rami Kashou from Project Runway Season 4? He was the Middle Eastern muscle bear that always drapes his models like Greek statues. Even if you're not a tourist, it's one of the highlights of Leather Week.
This year was important because it marks the 10 Year Anniversary of Big Muscle. I started Leather Week at a party called Zipper hosted by Chi Chi LaRue and Sister Roma. It was at a club on Market Street that isn't on my usual route, but they really brought out the crowds. It was a Friday night with beautiful shirtsleeve weather and everyone was wound up ready to party. I got tons of drink tickets, but kept forgetting to use them! Caravaggio (Dir. Derek Jarman: U.K., 1986)
7 years in the making, Caravaggio (U.K., 1986) remains one of Derek Jarman's most accessible and engaging works. Ostensibly a bio-pic on Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio, an influential and controversial 17th century Italian artist, it has been noted that Jarman also wove into the story elements from his own life. Narrative in form though experimental in tone, Jarman tells the story of Caravaggio's life in a series of flashbacks utilizing a style which subtly melds elements of the contemporary world with that of Caravaggio's. A painter himself, Jarman brings Caravaggio's work intricately and brilliantly to life, not just on the canvas, but through the lush action presented within the story.
Love Is The Devil: Study for a portrait of Francis Bacon (Dir. John Maybury: U.K., 1998)
Created by video artist, John Maybury (himself a peer and associate of Derek Jarman), Love is the Devil (U.K., 1998) portrays the tumultuous 7 year relationship between famed British painter, Francis Bacon, and his lover, George Dyer. The relationship between Bacon and Dyer begins when Dyer, a small time thief seeking to rob Bacon's home and studio, is caught by Bacon and invited to take whatever he like on the condition that he stay the night. Much like Caravaggio (but for entirely different reasons), Bacon's work is beautifully rendered, not on the canvas, but through the visual narrative of the film - bringing Bacon's often unsettling work horrifically to life.
